According to Carlos Esteves, Deputy Head of the Municipality's Road System Management Department, construction of bus lanes and of the actual vehicles should begin in 2013. "We will begin by re-structuring current operations and developing existing bus services into larger fleets," he said. The municipality has spent R180 million on a 124 new buses for the Durban transport fleet, due for delivery early in the New Year. These buses will replace older ones that are becoming too expensive to maintain. According to Esteves, only half of Durban's population use public transport.
"The difficulty in South Africa is that our cities are widespread, which means that public transport vehicles would have to travel a long distance just to pick up a few people," he said. "We will try to encourage people to move closer to their place of work, which will make public transport systems more efficient."
