90% of the world's population above the age of six will have a mobile phone by 2020, according to Ericsson's latest Mobility Report, published on Tuesday.
India and China are currently showing the fastest growth, with third quarter net additions of 18 million and 12 million respectively.
"The falling cost of handsets, coupled with improved usability and increasing network coverage, are factors that are making mobile technology a global phenomenon that will soon be available to the vast majority of the world's population," said Rima Qureshi, chief strategy officer at Ericsson, in a statement.
The Swedish equipment maker said smartphones accounted for 65%-70% of all phones sold in the third quarter, compared to 55% in Q3 2013, and predicted that smartphone sales will reach 800 million this year.
Despite the impressive figures, smartphones "currently account for just 37% of all mobile phone subscriptions", Ericsson said, so there is still plenty of room for growth.
Indeed, the company expects the number of smartphone-based mobile connections worldwide to grow from 2.7 billion today to 6.1 billion by 2020.
In terms of mobile data traffic, video will continue to dominate, Ericsson said. Driven by improvements in the overall mobile video experience, it currently accounts for 45%-55% of mobile traffic. By 2020, Ericsson expects mobile video traffic to have increased tenfold, accounting for 55% of mobile data.
