Each conflict carries long-term repercussions on a national and regional level. With a drastically changing political and social climate, instability has effectively made traditional socio-economic development efforts/processes irrelevant in a number of member states. The member countries of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA) recognized the need to address these realities. Thus, UNESCWA has put forth efforts to alleviate the impact of conflict in the occupied Palestinian territory, Iraq and southern Lebanon. UN-ESCWA established the unit for Emerging and Conflict Related Issues (ECRI) in January of 2006 to consolidate and enhance its efforts in the areas of development under crisis and conflict mitigation. http://unpan1.un.org/intradoc/groups/public/documents/unescwa/unpan035391.pdf Others UNESCWA Wed, 08 Jul 2009 06:48:28 GMT Economic and Social Repercussions of the Israeli Occupation: Facts and Figures The growing poverty and humanitarian need in the occupied Palestinian territory can be primarily attributed to the Israeli closure system, which restricts Palestinian access to health and education services, employment and social networks. By highlighting the relevant facts and figures, this brochure illustrates the adverse conditions faced by both Palestinians residing in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem and the Arab population in the Occupied Syrian Golan. http://unpan1.un.org/intradoc/groups/public/documents/unescwa/unpan035390.pdf Others UNESCWA Wed, 08 Jul 2009 06:42:39 GMT EGM on Strengthening Good Governance Practices in Conflict Affected Countries The EGM brought together a wide range of local, regional and international experts and representatives from member states to discuss issues relating to the importance and mutually reinforcing roles of good governance, human rights, social and economic development and peacebuilding.
