The UN expert is visiting UAE on the invitation from Emirates eGovernment to carry out its national-level project of developing and enhancing federal government portals to be on par with the established international standards and best practices.

Emirates eGovernment has scheduled to conduct a number of seminars and workshops for the benefit of the federal government bodies during Kerby's 10-day visit. Federal ministries, councils and entities have been invited to take part in the different activities beginning tomorrow.

Al Suwaidi welcomed Kerby and said, "We appreciate the role Mr. Kerby and UNDESA are playing in developing the eGovernment programme and its application around the world. I invite our brethren in the federal government entities to actively participate in the workshops and seminars." "We need to invest in this opportunity in order to further enhance UAE government entities' online presence," Al Suwaidi added.

The UN advisor's visit is part of a project Emirates eGovernment launched almost a year ago in order to improve the UAE's competitiveness in the field of eGovernment. The UAE was ranked 49th in the 2010 UN eGovernment Survey issued by the United Nations Public Administration Network (UNPAN). This was a sizeable decline from 32nd rank as per the 2008 UN eGovernment Survey report.

Commenting on the UN reports, Al Suwaidi said, "We hope the efforts of the Emirates eGovernment team during the past year will restore UAE's status in the field of eGovernment and see an improved rank in the 2012 report." "We want Emirates eGovernment's contribution to be one of the main factors behind the enhancement of UAE's competitiveness. In all our efforts, we keep in mind the UAE Vision 2021 which requires all of us to work hard and in coordination with each other in order for the UAE to be one of the best countries in the world," he added.

In November 2011, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai emphasised the importance of enhancing the competitiveness of the UAE on the international level; a target that requires the combined efforts of the federal, local and private sector entities.
