The two-day workshop which aims at exploring ways to improve the performance of the e-Government in the UAE will start on Monday, 13th December in Dubai. UN Adviser for e-government Richard Kirby will be the main speaker at the event.
Salem Khamis Al Shair Al Suwaidi, Director General of the General Information Authority
said that through organizing this workshop, GIA aims to give representatives from the five ministries that are evaluated in the process of preparing the e-Government Readiness Index, the chance to meet Richard Kirby, a global expert who is the technical officer of the Report and the regional adviser for e-government at the UN. They will learn from him about the methodology and tools used in evaluating government websites.
The five ministries that are directly concerned with the UN evaluation are the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Social Affairs and Ministry of Education. In addition to the teams representing the ministries, the workshop will be attended by representatives from the Prime Minister's Office, the Emirates Competitiveness Council (ECC), and the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA).
Al Suwaidi praised the overwhelming response from the ministries and other entities to participate in the workshop. He said, "We have seen great enthusiasm from every one to work together to improve the E-Readiness of the UAE. We are confident that the UAE will have a better ranking in the next e-Government Index which is expected in January 2012."Kirby will also present his vision and initial evaluation of the ministries' websites to help work teams in the ministries improve their websites.
At the end of the workshop, GIA will work with the five concerned ministries in addition to the Telecommunication Authority (TRA), the Emirates Competitiveness Council (ECC) and the UN team to develop an action plan that will be implemented immediately after the workshop in order to improve the online presence of the government websites to be on a par with international best practices. In addition to the ministries' websites, changes will be also implemented on the federal portal (government.ae).
The UN issues the e-Government Survey every two years to gauge the progress made in implementing the e-Government programmes around the world. The 2010 report released earlier this year covers around 190 countries.
The General Information Authority has adopted a number of measures to improve the e-Government readiness status. These measures include continuous contact with the e-Government teams in the UN and preparation for the next survey that will be conducted in August 2011.
The workshop will start on Monday, 13th December, 2010 at The Palace Hotel in Dubai and will last for two days.
