The government's egovernance initiatives have earned accolades from the private sector.
The public diplomacy division of the ministry of external affairs was awarded the 'e-Gov 2.0 Awards 2010 for the most innovative use of Social Media and Web 2.0 tools' on Thursday.
Instituted by eGov magazine, the awards aim to acknowledge initiatives in the use of social media tools for creating interactive platforms to improve citizen service delivery. A total of 128 nominations were received in the website and the social media categories. A sevenmember jury, chaired by Ashis Sanyal, senior director in the ministry of communication & IT, screened the nominations.
In the last six months, the public diplomacy division has launched a series of digital initiatives that have made it one of the first government organisations to tap into the potential offered by social media and web tools.
These include a Twitter page (www.twitter.com/ indiandiplomacy) that has acquired close to 3500 followers, YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/ indiandiplomacy), a blog (
www.indiandiplomacy.blogspot.com
) and a Facebook page (
www.facebook.com/-indiandiplomacy
).
The division's joint secretary Navdeep Suri, who received the award, described the initiatives as an interface between the government and the citizens.
The 1983- batch IFS officer, who is the brain behind most of these initiatives, said: " The people of India have never had it so easy to connect with their government. They are being able to reach policy makers within minutes through our web tools."
