Public bodies that continue to flout the law by refusing to file annual reports to Parliament on a timely basis are to be hauled before Parliament’s Public Administration and Appropriations Committee (PAAC).
Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Central Kingston Member of Parliament, Ronald Thwaites, described the reporting by some public bodies as tardy and an embarrassment to the country.
He enquired what steps were being taken to improve compliance, and whether sanctions would be taken against these public bodies.
The Central Kingston MP was supported by, Prime Minister Bruce Golding who recommended that board chairmen of non-compliant public bodies should be brought before the PAAC to account for the tardiness in reporting.
In a ministry paper on the reporting status for statutory agencies and public bodies, it was revealed that 23 per cent of the total number of government entities had no record of tabling annual reports in Parliament.
For the reporting period 2008/2009, 21 per cent or 32 public agencies had failed to submit outstanding annual reports for a year.
At least 14 government agencies or nine per cent of public bodies had not filed outstanding annual reports for a two-year period.
