People who are revolutionising public services through digital talent and innovation have not been getting the attention they deserve, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has said.
Opening a public sector digital awards event, Clegg said digital innovations had started to "revolutionise the way we deliver services", helping millions of people in the UK.
People working in the digital sector were said to create public services "fit for the 21st century".
He said digital public services had helped "cut waste and boost efficiency", allowing as much funding as possible to go to frontline services.
And as well as bringing communities together he said they had empowered people by enabling the government's transparency agenda.
"I passionately believe that, in an open society, in a modern democracy, information must be shared," he said.
"Knowledge is power. That's why the coalition has made greater transparency and absolute priority.
"Transparency is essential for citizens to hold their state to account. And [digital specialists] are all at the forefront of that extremely important agenda."
