The President said the Health Ministry had handled about 21,000 tenders annually so far and the process has turned the Ministry into a private company with rampant corruption. Colombo: The Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena assured that his government will take every possible measure to create a free and effective health service and a saturated nursing service. President Sirisena said the government is committed to remove inefficiencies in the health service make it a quality service for both the public and the employees. He gave this assurance addressing a ceremony held at the National Youth Services Council Auditorium in Maharagama to present set of proposals for the nursing service to the President. President of the Government Nurses Union Saman Rathnapriya presented a series of proposals for a pro-peoples' health service to the President. Addressing the gathering, the President said the Health Ministry had handled about 21,000 tenders annually so far and the process has turned the Ministry into a private company with rampant corruption. The President promised to reduce the large number of tenders handled by the Ministry in the future after introducing the National Drugs Policy act. President said the challenge of setting up the quality of the health service has been endowed to Minister of health and Indigenous Medicine Dr. Rajitha Somarathna and expressed confidence that the Minister will take speedy measures about corrupted officials and their actions. He requested the nurses to dedicate in providing a better service for the public. Ministers Karu Jayasuriya and Patali Champika Ranawaka were among also present on the occasion.
