Australia’s federal government plans to significantly increase the proportion of cloud-based services in the AUD 6 billion it spends annually on information technology services. Government departments and agencies will now be required to adopt cloud services where it is fit for purpose, provides adequate protection of government data and delivers value for money.
The new policy outlines that agency heads would be able to approve proposals to place certain information in either offshore or domestically hosted public clouds. Previously, government departments were reluctant to cloud computing due to fears about data sovereignty if servers hosting files were located in another country.
The moves follow similar policies adopted by both the US and British governments in 2011 and 2013 respectively.
