The government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe adopted Friday a bill for the construction of temporary storage facilities for radioactive waste near the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.
The bill, adopted at a Cabinet meeting, calls on the government to ensure the safety of the facilities and complete within 30 years the final disposal of radioactive waste, including contaminated soil, after moving it outside Fukushima Prefecture.
It also says that the government should acquire all shares of Japan Environmental Safety Corp., a special law-based firm that will run the waste storage facilities.
The government hopes to begin the transport of radioactive soil to the facilities in January, after the bill is enacted during the ongoing extraordinary session of the Diet.
But there are persistent concerns among local residents in the Fukushima towns of Okuma and Futaba, where the facilities are planned to be built. The two municipalities also host the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant, operated by Tokyo Electric Power Co.Speech
