The government adopted Friday a package of comprehensive policy measures for promoting women’s careers, which will be implemented by around spring next year.
The package, adopted in the first meeting of a government task force on women’s promotion, features the provision of subsidies and preferential treatment in public procurement to companies that actively promote women’s roles.
“It’s very important to increase women in leadership positions,” Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said in the meeting. “Efforts should be made to allow all women to be active in society.”
Key challenges include easing women’s concerns about raising children and ensuring lifestyle stability for single-mother households, Abe said.
Giving women the opportunity to be active in society is one of the pillars of the growth strategy of Abe’s government, which has set a goal of increasing the proportion of women in leadership positions to 30 percent by 2020.
The policy package includes a plan to submit to the ongoing extraordinary Diet session a bill to oblige companies to set numerical targets for promoting women.
The package also includes measures to encourage companies to introduce telecommuting systems to allow their employees to balance their careers and family lives, and those to help women get reemployed after quitting for bearing and raising children.
