Indonesia's New Government Mulls Creating Population Ministry

A senior aide to Indonesian President-elect Joko Widodo said on Thursday that the upcoming government would establish a ministry particularly assigned to deal with population issues in the country.

Hasto Kristiyanto, deputy chief of Joko Widodo's power transition team, said the population ministry would organize demography data from across the country, which would eventually be used as input for the government to formulate its policies.

"Single map policy would be regarded as reference. There must be comprehensive data on people living in poverty. It would be used as the basis to formulate policies," Hasto said here in the transition team's camp.

Indonesia now records poverty rate at 11 percent of its more than 250 million population. That figure is slightly higher than the target set between 9 and 10 percent.

According to Hasto, the data compiled by the ministry would comprise names, addresses and other details concerning identities of the people in the country.

Through the data, the upcoming government expects to see the exact number of poor people, which would enable it to properly measure the policies it plans to impose, Hasto said.

He added that the population ministry would embrace the family planning agency of BKKBN to promote poverty alleviation through internal family approaches.

"So it would rejuvenate familiar approach, no longer use health approach to address poverty issue," he said.

Joko's transition team is now intensifying its consultation with the existing government to secure the transfer of power.

Joko Widodo will be installed as the nation's seventh president on Oct. 20 after winning the July 9 election through affirmation from the Constitution Court (MK).
