A proposed amendment to the Papua New Guinea organic law on political parties will come into force to control the political parties and candidates, Dr Alphonse Gelu says.
Gelu, the registrar of political parties and candidates, said the amendment to the organic law, which was nullified by the Supreme Court, would be revisited to make it better and provide stability.
He said the recent draft legislation to be presented to the National Executive Council next week was better than the previous one.
The organic law would include strategies to make the party system effective, he said. It would have a database for all party members so that information was provided for everyone involved in the party system and the involvement of women.
Gelu said one other change would be to include a woman to either become a vice president or president.
Meanwhile, the Constitutional Law Reform Commission will review the proposed law to amend the organic law on provincial and local government election, an official says.
This is to cater for women empowerment, a consultation to develop action plan on women’s political empowerment was told yesterday.
Constitutional Law Reform Commission secretary, Dr Erick Kwa said the organic law on local level government and provincial government elections should be amended and consultation would continue to next year.
He said the terms of references were to look at the political structure, the administrative structure and the legislative framework.
He said they were not coming up with a new law but a reform of the existing law.
