Currently the main goal and objective of the development of the Baku Metro is the reduction of traffic on the roads in Baku, head of the Baku Metro, Taghi Ahmadov told journalists on November 8, answering the questions on the metro in Sumgait city in Azerbaijan.

According to him, the subway is a public transport and in the future it will be developed in major cities such as Sumgayit, Ganja and Nakhchivan. There is no issue related to the metro connection between the towns.

"The main objective is to reduce traffic in the capital and therefore, work is underway on the development of metro lines within the city, not entering Baku's suburbs," Ahmadov said.

At present, the length of lines of the Baku Metro is 34.6 kilometres. Today, the Baku Metro has two lines. In the future, the number of subway lines will be increased to five, and the length will grow up to 119 kilometres with the number of stations up to 76.

Baku Metro has been operating since 1967 and has 23 stations. Previously a 20-year programme was adopted for its development.
