YEREVAN. – A meeting of interdepartmental commission on monitoring of border modernization and ensuring of Armenia’s security was held in Yerevan on Tuesday.

The meeting was chaired by Secretary of National Security Council Arthur Baghdasaryan. The program envisages radical modernization of checkpoints, simplification of administration and implementation of new approaches.

New border infrastructure, meeting international standards, will be built at Bagra, Bavra, Gogavan checkpoints on Georgian border. Over €61 million was allocated with 15 million as a grant, another part as a soft loan, and the rest was allocated from Armenia’s state budget.

“The program will provide an opportunity to facilitate all issues related to crossing of the Armenian-Georgian border, facilitating traveling of the citizens,” Baghdasaryan told reporters.

Implementation of the one-stop-shop approach supposes optimization process. A citizen or cargo transporters will have to deal with one or two departments. This will provide an opportunity to reduce the time spent at the checkpoint and reduce corruption risks.

Construction work will begin later this month, while technical control is being implemented by the French and Belgian companies. The technical part of the work will be completed within 2-3 years.

As for the Iranian-Armenian and Armenian-Turkish border, the subdivision of Russian “Rosgranitsa” company will hold modernization of relevant checkpoints under the agreement signed between Armenia and Russia.
