The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Finance, China has recently upgraded its unified cloud storage platform as part of its data centre overhaul.

In partnership with Hitachi Data Systems (HDS), the Bureau has recently deployed a centralised upgradeable cloud storage system to unify all business management systems within the bureau. The solution includes ‘1 Hitachi Universal Storage Platform (USP) V’ that will power behind the high-performance storage to build the virtualised storage pool.

The bureau also implemented Hitachi NAS Platform (HNAS) 3080, powered by BlueArc, as unstructured content cloud data gateway, and creating a unified storage platform. It will be used to store critical data such as office documents, images and email attachments in the bureau, requiring large-capacity high-speed capabilities.

The new solution also comes with a unified disaster recovery platform. This will ensure long-term business continuity even for the virtualised storage pools in remote production centres located in different places across Beijing.

The virtualised storage pool helps manage about 40TB data from the bureau and is capable for future petabyte-level expansion.

Background of the project
The Bureaus manages financial revenue and expenditure and financial supervision and regulation of Beijing’s economy, as part of the Beijing Municipal Government.

The need for the revamp came as the bureau realised the existing infrastructure could no longer serve its needs, which included the ability to conduct financial revenue allocation, managing non-tax government revenue, and overseeing financial and tax regulations and policies.

In 2011, the bureau started the initial overhaul of its data centre using unified Hitachi Data Systems that combined storage virtualisation with its management platform.
