The Mumbai Police have launched a YouTube campaign to reach out to citizens of the city and raise awareness of women’s issues.
Five Videos have been produced in partnership with marketing agency Ogilvy and Mather, and Code Red Films, and uploaded on YouTube.
The videos feature real police officers giving short messages about issues women face in Mumbai and options available to them if they wish to file a police report.
“Nobody has the right to disrespect you – stranger, friend, or even your husband”, says one message from Police Inspector Rajendra Chavan. “If someone harasses or disrespects you, you have the right to file a police complaint, and we request you to do so.”
The video gives the same message to men, and warns them to stay in line. “I have asked women to file complaints if they face any trouble, and we warn you, they will”.
Another video informs women about the presence of female police officers to take their statements at police stations.
“I know that often, you tolerate harassment and hesitate to file police complaints because you’re uncomfortable explaining the problem to male officers”, says Police Sub-Inspector Vidya Kaldate. “That is why many policewomen are present at police stations, to help and support you. So don’t tolerate harassment, it only encourages offenders.”
The police have also developed short videos for internal usage to educate police officers. These videos are running at police stations across the city.
The YouTube videos have been circulating on social media networks, with the first film crossing 1000 views since it was released on International Women’s Day, 8 March.
