Focus: ICT for MDGs
Country: Uzbekistan
Created: Mar 12, 2013

The Research and Development Centre entitled 'Fundamentals and problems of economic development of Uzbekistan' is being created at the Tashkent State Economic University under the relevant decision of the president.

The new structure will be established on the basis of the abolished Institute of Economics of the Academy of Sciences 'to enhance knowledge of scientific principles and problems of economic development of the country, develop science-based proposals on the priority areas for further reform and modernisation, sustainable economic growth, integrated development of territories, forecasting demographic processes and the labour market '.

Uzbek President has instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to organise a personnel certification of the abolished Institute of Economics and provide staffing of the centre with highly skilled and initiative scientists and specialists within a month.

As previously reported, in February last year, the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan approved the measures to optimise the structure of the Academy of Sciences, including the liquidation and reorganisation of a number of academic institutions.

Property and projects of the liquidated and reorganized scientific institutions were transferred mainly to regional and specialised institutions of higher education, as well as to the newly created scientific and research institutions.

Currently, the most authoritative analytical and research structure in Uzbekistan in the field of economy is the Centre for Economic Research (CER).

CER was established in 1999 by the Government of the Republic and the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

The centre provides analytical advice to the government and conducts research on a wide range of development issues.

By today the centre has presented over 150 reports and policy briefs on macroeconomic, monetary, fiscal and social policy, public administration, ICT, knowledge economy, administrative reform, economic integration and gender.
