The government estimates that South Korea’s youth population will shrink to half its size in 50 years as the nation's low birthrate trend continues.
The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family’s white paper on the youth population shows that young people between the ages of nine and 24 totaled ten-million-200-thousand as of late last year, accounting for 20-point-four percent of the nation’s total population.
The population of young people has been on the decline since 1980 when more than 14 million young people represented 37 percent of the total national population.
The white paper says that the persistent low birthrate trend will cut the number of youths to slightly over five million by 2060, which is less than half of the current level.
