Country: Korea (Republic of)

A new survey finds that more and more people believe children should not have to shoulder the living costs of their elderly parents alone and that the government and society should jointly step up.

In a recent poll by Statistics Korea on some 37-thousand people ages 13 and over, 51 percent of respondents said children should pay for their elderly parents' living costs, down from 53 percent in 2008. Forty-nine percent of those polled said the elderly should pay for their own living expenses, up two percentage points from 2008.

Thirty-three percent of respondents said that families should be responsible for taking care of their elderly parents. That’s down sharply from 40-point-seven percent posted four years ago. Meanwhile, the percentage of people who believe their parents should be jointly taken care of by their families, the government and society rose from 44 percent to 49 percent between 2008 and this year.

Seven percent of respondents said the eldest son or his wife should be responsible for supporting the parents, down sharply from 17 percent posted in 2008. The survey found that 75 percent of respondents believe that all children, and not just the eldest, should support their parents, up from 59 percent in 2008.
