Basuki Purnama, the newly elected Vice Governor of Jakarta Capital City, Indonesia, has captured the attention of citizens and government officials by uploading videos of his activities on the popular video-sharing network, YouTube.
Purnama records and uploads activities such as meetings with public servants, conversations with the public and events attended on his YouTube channel, PemprovDKI. He scolds bureaucrats for over-spending and makes accusations of corruption publicly. Discussions about budget cuts and project expenditure are also uploaded on YouTube.
“We want people to be able to watch everything,” Purnama said in an interview at Al Jazeera. “This is their money, not our money. The people have a right to know.”
The people of Jakarta have responded positively to this innovative use of social media. PemprovDKI has more than 28,000 subscribers, and the videos uploaded have collectively been watched more than 7.1 million times.
Some videos are extremely popular – a meeting with the city’s Department of Public Works, for example, has more than 1.4 million views. In the video, Purnama asks the department to cut the cost of several projects by 25 per cent, and proposes to have the Corruption Eradication Commission look into past public works projects if the department refuses to do so. Purnama even uploaded a conversation with a resident about the risk of flooding of his house.
Purnama has gotten high support from anti-corruption activists for his unprecedented actions, though some observers predict impending political trouble as public servants are publicly accused of corruption.
