The number of people on welfare in August rose by 6,342 from the previous month to a record high of 2.13 million the welfare ministry said Wednesday.
The number of households with one or more recipients increased by 5,230 to 1.56 million, also the highest on record.
Meanwhile, the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry received 5,183 inquiries about welfare from people affected by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami from August to September this year. The period saw 1,394 households begin to receive welfare benefits.
