CUTTING-EDGE information technologies and products, including mobile Internet, cloud computing and GPS, are used in the transportation, education and medical sectors in Shanghai, Shanghai Daily learned at an exhibition yesterday.
A BMW car that can be unlocked with an iPhone, a school bus which can keep parents informed of the location of their child and mobile applications telling people the exact time when the next bus will arrive were just some of the technologies in the spotlight as the 14th China International Industry Fair opened yesterday in Shanghai.
China Unicom, the country's No. 2 mobile carrier, has invested 185 million yuan (US$29.4 million) in cloud computing in 15 cities including Beijing and Shanghai.
Cloud services allows users to access, store and edit data and files online.
In Shanghai, China Unicom provides 10 gigabytes of cloud storage for Word, Excel and picture files, which can be easily shared through short message and Weibo services.
"It's just like a portable personal data center for every one," the official at the booth said, showing the "Smart Cloud" application on an iPhone.
Besides cloud computing, a BMW was also shown during the fair. Car owners can control the car by phone through China Unicom's 3G network, including locking and unlocking doors and turning on the air conditioner.
China Telecom also showed wireless technologies through its 3G and WiFi network.
With a card-swipe device on school buses, parents can get short messages sent to their mobile phone when their children get on and off buses through China Telecom's network.
