ANCHOR: The number of self-employed people aged 60 and over has surged by more than 100-thousand from last year. Our Bae Joo-yon has more.
REPORT: Statistics Korea announced on Thursday that around one-point-eight million people aged 60 or older were estimated to be self-employed as of August, up nearly 110-thousand from a year ago. Of those, some one-point-three million ran their businesses alone.
The statistics agency said that the number of self-employed people aged 60 and older saw a decline up until 2010 then began to surge from last year, apparently due to a rise in the older population and a jump in the number of retirees who are not able to enjoy national pension benefits.
The total number of self-employed people in South Korea, including those who work for a family business without getting paid, stood at seven-point-one million, up two percent from a year ago. Of the total, the number of men grew by roughly 120-thousand to four-point-three million, while the number of women rose by 16-thousand to two-point-eight million.
The statistics agency found that among the total number of self-employed people, around one-point-nine million were graduates of college or graduate schools. That’s up 169-thousand from last year. The agency added that 210-thousand people who are college or graduate school graduates were estimated to work at businesses run by their families or spouses without getting paid. The number of such people rose by 23-thousand from last year.
