MANILA, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine government and the secessionist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) took a significant step to bringing lasting peace in southern Philippines on Monday afternoon by signing a framework agreement on creating a new Bangsamoro entity.
The framework agreement was signed by Marvic Leonen, head of the Philippine government peace panel and Mohagher Iqbal, chief of the MILF peace panel in Malacanang, the presidential palace.
The signing of the landmark document was witnessed by Philippine President Benigno Aquino III, MILF chairman Al Haj Murad Ebrahim, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, and Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Teresita Deles.
"Today we sign an agreement that can finally see genuine, lasting peace in Mindanao. This agreement now defines the very path we take as a people -- one where opinions are heard and hope is shared," said Aquino in his speech before the signing of the framework agreement.
Murad in his speech appealed to the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) to support the framework agreement.
"This is not a time for recrimination. This is a time for unity, " he said.
