The government will provide an additional 284.2 billion yen in reconstruction subsidies for areas damaged by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, the Internal Affairs and Communication Ministry said Tuesday.
The subsidies will be paid Wednesday to nine prefectures, including Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima, which were hit hardest by the disaster, and 223 municipalities in 11 prefectures, the ministry said.
Of the nine prefectures, Miyagi will receive the largest amount, 57.5 billion yen, followed by Iwate with 38.9 billion yen and Fukushima with 28.2 billion yen.
Among Miyagi's municipalities, Sendai will receive 15.8 billion yen, Ishinomaki 12.3 billion yen and Kesennuma 7.4 billion yen. Iwaki in Fukushima Prefecture will receive 6 billion yen.
The recipient local governments can use the subsidies for reconstruction projects and covering the costs of bringing in support personnel.
