Thailand’s ICT Ministry on August 29 launched a pilot project to install intellectual circuit TV (ICTV) to improve public safety in Bangkok’s most densely populated district.
“Wi-Fi connected ICTV will keep a close eye on activity in the community while residents with internet access will play an important role to ensure safety of their neighbourhoods,” said ICT Minister Gp Capt Anudith Nakornthap.
Residents of Klong Toey district will be under an online security service provided by the ICT Ministry and CAT Telecom (CAT) under the Safe Community Project, one of the projects under the Smart Thailand Campaign to leverage the use of ICT to modernise the country.
The ICTV to be installed in Klong Toey, will be equipped with high-definition digital cameras giving higher resolution than normal CCTV cameras, according to Kittisak Sriprasert, President of CAT.
With its connection to the internet, the service can be used as a surveillance centre linked to a Geographic Information System (GIS) to improve future performance, Sriprasert added.
CAT will also provide free Wi-Fi at the two largest public gathering locations in the district with a connection speed of at least 12/2Mbps, as part of the government’s free Wi-Fi programme.
Klong Toey district is located at the heart of Bangkok, and well known for being the capital’s most populated low-income district. The ICTV project is expected to safeguard residents’ lives and property as well as helping to tackle crime and drug trafficking.
