The military has modified its plans for troop reductions in the coming decade.
An official at the Defense Ministry said under previous plans, military personnel numbers were supposed to be cut from 640-thousand to 517-thousand by 2020. However, since the Marine Corps is supposed to be augmented by five-thousand new forces, the government revised its plan to reduce the number of military personnel to 522-thousand by 2022.
The number of noncommissioned officers will also be increased to around 40-thousand, another factor in the government's decision to push back the reduction.
The Defense Ministry will move forward with its plan to establish a brigade in the East to brace against an invasion by North Korea’s special forces, estimated at 200-thousand strong. It will also establish a satellite surveillance unit to monitor satellite activities in the skies above the Korean Peninsula.
The Defense Ministry revised the 2005 reform bill for national defense for 2020 in March of last year, and has continued to revise and complement the bill ever since.
