Public Sector Most Targeted by Cyber Attacks: Report |

The July 2012 Symantec Intelligence Report has revealed that the public sector is the most targeted industry by phishing activity in July, with one in 113.3 emails comprising a phishing attack; one in 85.3 emails being blocked as malicious.
The Education sector was the most spammed industry sector in July, with a spam rate of 70.3 per cent compared to 69 per cent of spam rate for the Automotive sector.
The report also showed that Saudi Arabia is the most spammed country in July, with a spam rate of 79 per cent, compared to 68.5 per cent in the UK.
In East Asia, Hong Kong ranks the most spammed country with 67 per cent of email was blocked as spam, followed by 66.6 per cent in Singapore, and 64.1 per cent in Japan.
Phishing activity in Australia accounted for one in 752.1 emails, one in 2,241.4 in Hong Kong, one in 7,448.8, and one in 3,450.6 in Japan and Singapore respectively.
From the same report, Olympic scam spam rate has increased steadily before doubling from May to late July, when the Games began. Attackers used Olympic themed hashtags on twitter to spread malicious code, bundling threats with popular Olympic-themed Android apps, and creating spam and phishing scams that pretend to be contests sponsored by credit card companies. There have also been instances of spammers attempting to trick users into downloading malware.
According to Akamai’s Q1 2012 State of the Internet report, the most frequent origins of attack traffic were from the Asia Pacific/Oceania region.
In the first quarter of 2012, more than 42 per cent of abserved attack traffic originated in the Asia Pacific/Oceania region while Europe originated about 35 per cent, North and South America with a combined of 21 per cent, and just under 1.5 per cent from Africa.
Attack Traffic and Top Ports Attacked
According to the Akamai report report, there was quarterly growth in the percentage of observed attack traffic from China (16 per cent andnumber one on the top 10), the US (11 per cent), Russia (7 per cent), Turkey (5.7 percent), Romania (3 per cent), and Germany (1.9 per cent). However, there were percentages drop relative to the prior quater in Taiway (3 per cent), South Korean (4.3 per cent), and Brazil (4 per cent).
Global Average and Peak Connection Speeds
When it comes to average connection speeds, all of the top 10 countries experienced positive year-over-year changes in average connection speeds. Globally, a total of 125 countries experienced year-over-year increases and only 10 countries that qualified for inclusion saw declines in connection speeds. The global average connection speed in the first quarter was 2.6 Mbps.
South Korea (15.7 Mbps) featured the fastest average connection speed. Countries/regions rounding out the top 5 included Japan (10.9 Mbps), Hong Kong (9.3 Mbps), the Netherlands (8.8 Mbps) and Latvia (8.8 Mbps).
Year-over-year, the global average peak connection speed increased by 25 percent, and increases were also seen across all of the top 10 countries. Globally, nearly 130 qualifying countries saw year-over-year increases in average connection speeds, ranging from 3.8 percent growth in Pakistan (to 5.9 Mbps) to a 213 percent jump in Libya (to 3.8 Mbps).
In summary, the top three countries in the Asia Pacific region with the highest average connection speeds and a high level of broadband connectivity are South Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong – still holding steady from the last report.
China still remains the top attack traffic source with 16 per cent of observed traffic in total; Other countries in Asia that generated attack traffic are Taiwan (#5), South Korea (#6), and India (#9).
South Korea had the highest level of high broadband adoption at 53 per cent and the highest average connection speed at 15.7 Mbps, while Hong Kong recorded the highest average peak connection speed at 49.3 Mbps.
