The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has awarded an INR 87.23 crore (US$15.8 million) contract for IT infrastructure to host and support the world’s largest database.
The tender has been awarded for a 3-year storage, IT architecture, and associated support services provision, with the possibility that the term may be extended further.
The servers will be hosted at Tulip Data City—a 900,000 square feet, 100 megawatt facility in the country’s IT hub Bangalore, which is slated to become the “World’s third largest and Asia’s largest data center” according to an official press release.
It will also be one of the world’s largest “green” data centres, and was inaugurated earlier this year by India’s Minister of State for Communications and IT, Sachin Pilot.
The UIDAI programme, which aims to provide each resident of the country with a 12-digit unique identification number, has so far enrolled 180 million people. The database will be used to store names, addresses, iris and fingerprint information in an encrypted format to comply with the country’s privacy laws.
Residents can check the status of their enrollment as well as monitor statistics about the programme via an online real-time updating system.
