Japan intends to increase the ratio of female police officers from the current 6.8 percent to about 10 percent by April 2023, police said Tuesday.
The target reflects concerns that the number of aspiring police officers will decline as the country's birthrate is falling, the National Police Agency and the National Public Safety Commission said in a joint annual report.
To secure qualified police officers and revitalize the organization's structure, female police officers need to be actively recruited and promoted to senior posts, according to the report.
Since fiscal 2002, more than 1,000 female police officers nationwide have been recruited each year.
As of April this year, the number of female officers stood at 17,700.
A total of 242 female police officers currently hold the rank of police inspector or higher. Of that number, 35 are superintendents.
