A committee for the joint participation of the general public in judiciary affairs will be launched this coming week to discuss procedures that are more appropriate to South Korean society by public juries during court rulings.
The committee, to be launched on July 12, will probe the results of the public juries put to use so far since 2008, gather social opinions, and suggest a jury system format to Yang Seung-tae, the chief justice of the Supreme Court.
The 13-member committee includes prosecutors, lawyers, law professors and one member to head the group delegated by the chief justice.
Use of public juries has increased every year since they were first implemented in 2008, with roughly 570 rulings made so far.
