With the signing of a specific action plan in late June, Myanmar is committed to ending the recruitment of child soldiers immediately, an action banned by the United Nations and condemned by the international community, Radhika Coomaraswamy, the UN special representative for children in armed conflict, said here on Thursday.

Coomaraswamy made the statement as she was briefing reporters here on the details of the action plan, signed by the government of Myanmar and the United Nations last week. Coomaraswamy was a witness at the signing ceremony in Myanmar.

"The objective of my visit to Myanmar was to witness the signing of an action plan -- as part of this process, the (UN) secretary-general requested the Security Council submit a list of names that commit violations against children," Coomaraswamy said at a press conference here.

The plan, signed after a five-year negotiation process, sets a timetable and measurable activities for the release and reintegration of children associated with government armed forces, as well as the prevention of further recruitment. It also calls for additional UN and government programs for affected children.

"The action plan is quite specific, it is an 18-month time frame, it is a commitment to cease child recruitment immediately," the special representative said.

"We hope that this will signal a transformation," she added.

Also at the press conference, Coomaraswamy announced that this will be her last press conference as the special representative for children in armed conflict, as she will be retiring from her current post at the end of July.

"I will be returning to my country for a little and then teaching at NYU (New York University) Law School," she said.
