China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin put forward a three-point proposal on Wednesday with the aim of boosting sustainable development of the world's cities and addressing challenges posed by urbanization.

"To tackle the problems caused by urban development, we need not only technological innovation, but also transition of city dwellers' life style," said Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Meeting with foreign mayors who were in Beijing to attend the 2012 Beijing Forum on the Sustainable Development of Cities, Jia called for cooperation among the world's cities to jointly combat trade protectionism and promote the development of healthy international trade to provide a shield against the current world economic downturn.

"Cities in this world should learn from each other and foster cooperation in an aim to improve their planning and management capacity and work together on issues such as environmental protection, upgrades to economic structure and green growth," Jia said.
He suggested giving full play to cultural exchanges, noting that such activities help increase mutual understanding and friendship among residents of different cities and boost inter-city cooperation.

The Chinese government places high value in establishing friendship among Chinese and foreign cities and encourages its local governments to boost cooperation in such a nature, Jia added.

Mayors and senior officials from 25 cities around the world, including Washington D.C., Budapest, Copenhagen and Venice, gathered at the forum to discuss the theme: "Culture: the driving power of a city's sustainable development."

They also shared their experience and worked on solutions to urban sustainable development.
