Papua New Guinea: O’Neill Defends Free Education Policy

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill says the tuition-free education policy is a big relief to parents and those who criticise it have nothing better to offer. O’Neill said there were some hiccups in its implementation at the start of the year because many schools did not have bank accounts. “But this has been sorted out,” a statement from the prime minister said. He said of the K700 (USD330) million to fund the programme this year, K300 (USD141) million had been disbursed. And he had received reports that all schools had received their allocations. O’Neill said the government was ready to release the second component of funding totalling K400 (USD188) million to the schools. He made the remarks on Monday in Kimbe, West New Britain province, while campaigning for his People’s National Congress party candidates. The candidates included David Sui (West New Britain regional), Renei Raymann (Talasea) and Tony McKinnon (Kandrian-Gloucester open). He was addressing a crowd at the Independence Park in Kimbe town after meeting with Governor Peter Humphreys. O’Neill’s remarks were aimed at critics of the policy including Enga Governor Peter Ipatas and Southern Highlands Governor Anderson Agiru. Ipatas and Agiru said on different occasions last week that the free education policy was not working, some schools were missing out and the programme could not be sustained. But O’Neill said the critics had no alternatives to offer. “Their election campaigns and criticisms are hollow with no substance. “We should be wary of them because they want to lump this burden back on the shoulders of our parents and divert the money elsewhere. “I want to assure you all that this policy will continue every year that PNC party is in government,” O’Neill told the people.
