Bangkok Hospital will double its IT budget this year to upgrade its information, electronic medical records, and radiology information systems to improve its healthcare service.
Dr Somsak Wankijcharoen, the hospital’s chief information officer said that this year the hospital will digitise all medical records throughout its 40 organisations to electronic medical records and to invest in the radiology information system in order to increase teh capability of its x-ray services.
Also, the hospital will look at upgrading its existing hospital information system which has been implemented for many years.
“Normally, the hospital will invest 5 per cent of total revenue in IT. But, this year, we have almost doubled our IT budget,” he added.
According to Dr Wankijcharoen, Bangkok Hospital has been investing in IT for many years and continue to keeping investing in IT to enhance the hospital’s operating process, healthcare service quality, and to increase customer satisfaction.
The hospital’s total revenue of 2011 is THB 37.75 billion (US$ 1.2 billion). Total revenue for 2012’s 1Q is THB 12.96 billion (US$ 409 million).
He inserted that in the hospital, there are two main parts involving IT- the core system called hospital information system, and the support systems.
Also, the hospital plans to increase the number of “Smart Intensive Care Unit (ICU) rooms” from the current 16 rooms to a total of 60 rooms by the end of this year. The smart ICU room is equipped with technology and automated systems for real-time monitoring of a patient’s condition.
“We also have four mobile ICU cars and two mobile Coronary Care Unit (CCU) cars, all of which are equipped with medical tools and the Global Positioning System (GPS). The hospital can monitor all ICU and ambulances to better manage their resources,” Dr Wanikijcharoen said.
The hospital rolled out Microsoft Exchange throughout its 29 campuses last year and is now investing in a support system with the implementation of the Microsoft Share Point throughout all campuses in the next 18 months.
With the Microsoft Exchange and Share Point, the hospital staff of all departments can work together and collaborate with other more efficiently, he added.
