The Indian Government has woken up to the importance of inculcating disaster preparedness among its citizens. It is holding a "mega mock drill" on February 15, 2012, along with local government departments and is actively inviting residents to participate. The government is also holding a two-day event in April to disseminate best practices on disaster management through knowledge sharing with various stakeholders.
The Indian Government is rushing to inculcating disaster preparedness among its citizens by inviting them for a "mega mock drill" on February 15, 2012, in partnership with the local government. The government is also holding a two-day event in April to discuss and disseminate best practices on disaster management through knowledge sharing with those involved in the various aspects of disasters reduction.
India, with its vast size and varied geographical features is vulnerable to many natural and human-induced disasters that impact the economic development of the country. It is the poor and marginalised people who are affected the most due to disasters.
In this context, the Government of India has decided to launch a 'National Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction (NPDRR)' on the theme 'Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction in Development: from Risk to Resilience' by merging the India Disaster Management Congress (IDMC) being held earlier as a biennial event with the proposed National Platform. It aims to bring all the stakeholders on a single forum to share their knowledge and views on setting National Action Plan on DRR.
The Indian Government is becoming vigilant on the issue of disaster risk reduction. To create awareness on disaster preparedness among the local people, NDMA in collaboration with Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) is organising a "mega mock drill" on February 15, with participation from people. The first National Platform is being jointly organised by the Ministry of Home Affairs, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) at Vigyan Bhawan on 25-26 April, 2012.
The government is proactively inviting individuals as well as organisations to participate in the meet, which is open to professional disaster managers, policy makers, scientists, technocrats, teachers, students, bilateral and multi-lateral agencies, private sector organizations, community leaders and other stakeholders involved in disaster risk reduction and safe development practices.
Besides the discussions, the event will have an exhibition space where participants can showcase their ideas, projects and products. The government is inviting papers and proposals that can be submitted online at www.nidm.gov.in/npdrr.
