The ASEAN-UN workshop on “Lesson Learned and Best Practices of the United Nations and Regional Organisations in Conflict Prevention, Peacemaking, Peacekeeping and Peace building” was concludes today at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia. The workshop was attended by Representatives of ASEAN Member States, UN Secretariat delegations (Department of Political Affairs and Department of Peacekeeping Operations), ASEAN Secretariat staff, experts from the European Union, and the African Union.

The two-day Workshop was inaugurated by H.E. Mr Sayakane Sisouvong, Deputy Secretary-General for ASEAN Political Security Community; and H.E. Mr Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, Assistant-Secretary-General for Political Affairs of the United Nations; and H.E. Mr KAN Pharidh, the Permanent Representative of Cambodia to ASEAN.

Mr Sisouvong said that “the workshop is the first concrete activity done under the framework of the ASEAN-UN Joint Declaration on the Comprehensive Partnership between ASEAN and the United Nations. It focused on the lessons and best practices of the United Nations and regional organisations as well as their collaboration in Africa, Europe and Asia in conflict prevention, peacemaking, peacekeeping and peace building”. Furthermore, he said that the workshop also identified possible ASEAN-UN initiatives and activities, aimed at enhancing ASEAN’s capacity in these areas as well as strengthening ASEAN-UN partnership in maintaining regional and international peace and security.

The Workshop was organised in line with the Joint Declaration on Comprehensive Partnership between ASEAN and the United Nations adopted at the 4th ASEAN-UN Summit on 19 November 2012 in Bali, Indonesia. The Joint Declaration calls for closer cooperation between the two organisations in a variety of areas, including peace and security, and the ASEAN Political Security Blueprint and its stated objective of enhancing ASEAN’s capacity in good offices, mediation, and conciliation.
