This is not the first time that mobile money services have been launched in the country. However, this new service introduces a person to person transaction. Clients can get the service without going to a post office and the charge for each transaction is three takas. The service can be utilised for the payment of bills. The government can also pay salaries to employees through the service.
Initially, 50 post offices in the capital, Dhaka, have been developed for the service and four new districts will be prepared each month for the service. According to M Mobasherur Rahman, director general, BPO, the directorate is targeting 30 lakh clients in the first year and one crore in the second.
Two types of technologies will be used for the service: SMS and internet.
