“Surging inflation, a weak post-tsunami economic recovery in Japan and debt woes in the U.S. and Europe threaten East Asia's economic outlook, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) said Thursday.

The Manila-based lender maintained its economic growth forecasts for 14 emerging and newly industrializing East Asian countries in 2011 and 2012. But it said the region faces risks that also include more volatile financial markets and destabilizing inflows of short term capital, also known as ‘hot money’…” [Associated Press]

Dow Jones reports that “Emerging east Asian economies shouldn't abruptly ease off the policy-tightening brakes due to weakness in the advanced world, and some nations may need to move faster, not slower, to remove crisis-era stimulus, the ADB said …In its semi-annual Asia Economic Monitor report, the ADB warned that inflation in the region could accelerate further…” [Dow Jones News Service]

AFP notes that “The Manila-based lender said strong domestic demand and surging commodity prices had pushed inflation above 10-year averages in some East Asian countries and was being exacerbated by speculative money flowing into the region…” [Agence France Presse]

Kyodo News writes that “The ADB on Thursday revised downward its forecast for Japan's economic growth in 2011 to a contraction of 0.5 percent due to the weaker-than-expected recovery of the Japanese economy…” [Kyodo News]
