The Government has stressed its policy to promote Thai products and services through the creative economy.

In his remarks at the “Thailand’s Best Friends” certificate presentation ceremony, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva urged international investors and business people to explore new innovations in Thai products and services.

The ceremony took place at Santi Maitri Building, Government House, on 23 June 2011, when the Prime Minister expressed appreciation to the recipients of the “Thailand’s Best Friends” Award 2011 for their loyalty to Thai products and services. The event marked the third year of the “Thailand’s Best Friends” project, an initiative of the Ministry of Commerce to highlight the tremendous potential of Thailand’s export industries.

The Prime Minister stated that the policy of promoting the creative economy rests on continuing to cultivate unique Thai talents and abilities. By building upon local wisdom, traditional artistry, and skills and “know-how” specific to Thai culture, the country is “adding value” to Thai products and “serving them up” in a way that it hopes is appealing to international markets.

In the past, he said, Thailand’s main exports have included electrical appliances and electronics, automobiles, gems and jewelry, plastic beads, chemical substances, and food and agricultural products. This year, the country feels confident in the growth of its multi-faceted array of “lifestyle-related” products and services. Furthermore, Thailand stands ready to market its services and expertise in the digital content sector, as well as in the service sector, particularly“health spas.

These are two industries where Thailand has a multitude of talent and the utmost potential for achieving world-class quality standards. In fact, he said, digital content and spa-related enterprises have already generated sales of 20 billion baht a year, which in turn enables the country to achieve financial liquidity and create a wide array of employment opportunities.

For Thailand, he said, exports have accounted for, and remain, an essential component of income, as well as a significant engine for economic growth and a path to a robust economy. The Prime Minister pointed out that, despite the strong impact of the global economic downturn that began in 2008, Thailand is still holding out strong in exports. The strength of the country’s export industry and the world-class quality of Thai products and services have therefore not only mitigated the effects of the challenging global economic environment, but also allowed Thailand to draw in potential importers in new export sectors of the Thai economy.

With this in mind, he said, the Thai government aims to strengthen valuable partnerships with international importers and buyers. It is also intended to provide them with opportunities and platforms to get to know Thailand better -- showing them the very best of what Thailand offers, including its particular brand of talent and capabilities.
