ICCB President Mahbubur Rahman speaking at the seminar titled 'Compliance with corporate governance reporting by listed companies in Bangladesh' in the city Saturday organised by ICAB.

International Chamber of Commerce, Bangladesh (ICCB) president Mahbubur Rahman said Saturday good corporate governance cannot be ensured in listed companies in the country without transparency, independence and cooperation.

He was addressing a seminar titled 'Compliance with Corporate Governance Reporting by Listed Companies in Bangladesh' organised by Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB) at its auditorium in the city.

He said organising the seminar is a timely initiative and it will be very useful for ICAB members.

Mr Mahbubur Rahman said political divide is everywhere in the country and this division is reflected also in company board room disrupting proper governance.

"When there is cooperation, there can be transparency. Without cooperation and transparency, good corporate governance in the listed companies cannot be ensured and corruption cannot be eliminated or diminished," he said.

The ICCB president said report making is not possible without company owners' wish. And it is not about private companies, but public listed companies. It is almost everywhere in the country.

"The topic deserves day-long workshop and ICAB can organise this type of seminar in association with Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE)," he added.

Attending the seminar, SEC member Arif Khan said ensuring good corporate governance in the public listed companies is one of the highest priorities of SEC.

About ensuring good governance, Arif Khan said human quality is the best quality and honesty is the best policy.

He also admitted their failure in share market.

He blamed those who wanted profit without labour for the recent stock market debacle.

Chittagong University Accounting and Information System Professor Md Salim Uddin presented key-note paper at the seminar.

BRAC Business School director and professor Mamun Rashid and chartered accountant Md Akter Hossain Sannamat were present as panel speakers.

ICAB past president ABM Aziz Uddin conducted the session as the session chairman.
