Incumbent female union members and competing females for the posts in the ongoing union parishad elections believe that equal rights of women and their empowerment are must for building a developed digital Bangladesh.

They favoured strengthening the local government bodies side-by-side ensuring just rights of the female union parishad members to ensure their enhanced participations in the local public bodies at the grass roots levels.

Enhanced roles of female union members could ensure smooth development, human rights and social justice, women empowerment and the process of institutionalizing democracy to achieve the long cherished national goals, they said.

While talking to BSS in recent days, over 200 competing and incumbent female union parishad members of different districts in Rangpur division expressed the views and desired their firm determination to work for ensuring equal rights of the womenfolk.

They criticized administrative control in the activities of union parishads and demanded constitutional empowerment of female members to give democracy a firm footing and ensuring women empowerment to eradicate gender disparity.

Incumbent union members, Shahida Yasmin, Sanoara Begum and Ayesha Khatun of Shialdanga union parishad in Debiganj upazila of Panchagarh, who are also competing for the posts again in the ongoing union elections, stressed their more empowerment.

They said that the female union members must have equal rights in preparing local work- plans, policies and fund allocations for their proper emancipations with the development activities of the local government institutions.

Female union members Rokeya Begum, Kulsum Begum, Delwara Begum and Rahela Begum of different districts told that sustainable developments could get a strong footage if the female members' rights were ensured.

"Many female union members are not being involved with the decision-making process in the local government bodies that force them remaining mentally harassed in some cases undermining their abilities and rights," they said.

The female members demanded their due share of the old- age allowances, VGF and VGD cards, winter clothes and relief materials for proper distribution among the womenfolk of their respective areas.

They expressed determination of taking part in all activities of the local government bodies including arbitrations, developments with unity, sincerity, honesty, efficiency and friendly attitudes with the males for ensuring accountability of the bodies.

They opined for involving themselves in eliminating social curses like child marriage, dowry, divorce, polygamy, repression on women and children, human trafficking, acid terrorism, Hilla marriage etc for building a happy and peaceful society.

"Female union members must have active roles in all sorts of activities of the local government bodies with equal rights for paving stronger way to ensuring women empowerment" chairman of Shialdanga union Hasnat Zaman Chowdhury told BSS.
