TOKYO, Feb. 25 (AP) - (Kyodo)The Japanese government decided Friday to create a team to discuss ways to boost the capability of the Cabinet to collect information pertaining to national security.
The move is in response to Japan's defense policy outline adopted in December, which calls for the creation of an entity at the premier's office to coordinate policies among relevant ministers and advise the prime minister on defense-related matters, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told a news conference.
Edano, who will spearhead the four-member panel, said the team will review how the government responded in the past in handling diplomacy and security matters and how it handled emergency situations.
The team, consisting of Edano and three deputy chief cabinet secretaries, will also study security structures in other countries and simulate a contingency scenario.
Ahead of the defense policy outline, the ruling Democratic Party of Japan proposed last year to set up a national security council to enhance the information-gathering ability of the premier's office.
