UNICEF says the global economic crisis has had a much greater impact on food prices in the Pacific than previously thought.
New research shows the cost of food products climbed 100 per cent over the past three years.
UNICEF's chief advocate in the Pacific Samantha Cocco-Klein, says the big concern is for pregnant women and children who may become malnourished.
"We're getting reports from our central monitoring that people are really eating less and that in the poorest families they're down to just subsisting on starchy foods," she said.
"And the families are really trying to cope, cutting back on food to try and keep children in school."
"We're very concerned about that because for a developing child that can have a very serious impact very quickly if they're not getting nutritious meals."
Yesterday, the World Bank revealed rising food prices have pushed about 44 million people into poverty in developing countries, since last June.
The head of the Bank, Robert Zoellick also warned the stability of Central Asia could be affected by the increased cost of food.
