President Mohamed Naseed twisted the concept of National Authorities in the Decentralisation Act in order to control the councils that the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) was unable to win, opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) said yesterday.

Thulusdhoo MP Rozaina Adam told journalists at the party’s office that the authorities should be formed not to influence the works of the elected councils but to provide the services available in Male in the atolls.

“The president would not get the cooperation [of DRP councillors to form national authorities in such a way]. The president should learn to work within the boundaries of law,” she said.

“Although the president in his weekly radio address mentioned about the national authorities, the elected atoll councillors should not be worried about it. The national authorities should be formed to work under the councils in order to provide the services available in Male in the atoll.”

Rozaina stressed that the party would not give its cooperation to the government if President Nasheed interprets the laws in the way he wants to.

“We [parliamentarians] included the concept in the Decentralisation Act not to give the offices the power to rule. Our view was that the services provided in Male such as driving license, national identity card, passport, and matters related to an election should also be available in the atolls,” she said.

Speaking in his weekly radio address on Friday, President Mohamed Nasheed announced that the government would set up representative offices of the government in each administrative region to align local councils and the government.

He said the province offices already established in each administrative province would act as the government representatives in their respective region.
