In a bid to give a thrust to its e-governance initiatives, the state government’s information technology (IT) department has gone into a paperless mode. “From February 1, we have decided to do away with all files and do everything in the form of soft copies. We will also be signing files digitally and eventually even get the chief minister, who heads the department, to do the same,” said Nitin Kareer, IT secretary, while giving the details of the two-day 14th National Conference on e-governance to be held at Aurangabad beginning February 10.
This is part of the e-governance initiatives taken up by the state government, which will take off as a three-month pilot, Kareer said. “If we are successful in implementing this, then it can be replicated. But till then we are keeping our files as backups till we get the system in place,” he said.
The e-initiatives also include providing citizen services, including birth and death certificates, tax payments, checking land records, and 40 other services that the government has identified. “As of now we have five areas — Nagpur, Pune, Latur, Sindhudurg and Nanded — which we have linked on internet with 10 of these basic citizen services. It will be activated soon,” Kareer said.
The facilities will be extended to the entire state by the end of 2012. Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan has asked the department to extend its biometric attendance coverage and install machines in all government offices with more than 25 employees by March 31.
