Foreign companies can take part in Malaysia's largest infrastructure project, the mass rapid transport (MRT) system, whose construction is scheduled to kick off next July.
The Malaysian Land Public Transport Commission chief executive officer Mohd Nur Ismal Kamal told reporters here on Thursday that the tender process for the first line of the MRT project will be opened to both local and foreign companies.
Fully funded by the Malaysian government, Mohd Nur said that the tender process was expected to be opened in April next year to companies that have the expertise in implementing MRT projects.
The project, approved for the country's capital Kuala Lumpur, was announced by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak last Saturday.
The 36-billion-ringgit (11.5-billion-U.S.-dollar) project came as an effort by the Malaysian government to improve the public transport in the country's capital.
It is estimated to generate gross national income of between almost one billion to two billion U.S. dollars per annum from 2011 to 2020 and create 130,000 jobs during the construction period.
And between 2.5 billion and 3.8 billion U.S. dollars are estimated to be generated in terms of spinoff from the construction of the project.
Once completed, the project can benefit 1.2 million people. Better transport linkages with the existing bus and rail routs will also raise the public transport utilization rate in Kuala Lumpur significantly from 12 percent in 2009 to 50 percent in 2020.
