Preparations for the 8th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) in October next year are fast underway and the Expo will strive to involve more participation of the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from ASEAN.

Mr Nong Rong, Vice Secretary General of CAEXPO Secretariat, said this when he visited the ASEAN Secretariat today. He was accompanied by Mr Meng Xiaowen, Assistant Liaison Director of CAEXPO Secretariat. Their team was welcomed by the Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Economic Community, S. Pushpanathan.

During the dialogue, DSG Nathan noted the achievements of the 7th CAEXPO in October, for example, ASEAN enterprises used 1,178 booths, which is a new record high, while 39,130 trade visitors visited the event, which was a 2% increase compared to the previous CAEXPO. In addition, 46 investment promotion activities were carried out during the Expo and 135 international economic cooperation projects worth USD 6.69 billion were sealed. He also expressed his hope that more SMEs will be roped in to the Expo as they are important stakeholders in the economic pie.

The 8th CAEXPO will focus on the importance of partnership in protecting the environment. DSG Nathan added that he hope that the Expo will focus on the China-ASEAN Strategy on Environmental Protection Cooperation and the Priority Areas which have been identified, such as climate change, freshwater resources, environmentally sound technologies, and transboundary environmental pollution.

Mr Nong Rong said work are underway to make the 8th CAEXPO a resounding success. He added that at the recent ASEAN-China Summit in Ha Noi in October, Premier Wen Jia Bao had high praises as well as expectations for the CAEXPO and had made several suggestions to further ASEAN-China economic relations.

He said Premier Wen had committed that China will continue to implement measures to increase imports from ASEAN Member States, and encourage Chinese businessmen to invest in Member States. He also said that the CAEXPO Secretariat will work closely with the Chambers of Commerce in the ASEAN Member States and thank the ASEAN Secretariat for its support for the last seven Expos.

The next annual Expo, which will be held again in its birth town, Nanning City, in the southern Chinese province of Guangxi, from 21-26 October next year, coincides with the 20th anniversary of ASEAN-China relations. It also marks the first year completion after the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area (ACFTA) agreement came into effect.

The team arrived from Malaysia, where they met government officials and business circle to discuss Malaysia being the Expo’s Country of Honour next year. The team will move on to Surabaya, Singapore and Phnom Penh to also meet the government and business communities there to coordinate arrangements for next year’s CAEXPO.
